It’s the end of the world – What you do next tells me what I need to know about you, your employees and business!
Imagine for a moment….the earth has had a communication from another species that says “Hi Earthlings, we are rocking up in 2225 and taking the planet for ourselves. It’s going to take us that long to get there because while superior to you earth bugs we still can’t fly at the speed of light. So suck up your freedom humans, your time is nearly up!”
What do you do*?
1. Would you say “Stuff this for a game of soldiers, I quit, time to live on a farm in the middle of nowhere and ignore any requests for taxes!”
2. Would you refuse to believe it and demand an explanation.
3. Would you instantly retrain in biowarfare/spaceship building and be of the mindset “Bring it on alien scum we are going to be ready for you!”
4. Can we not reason with them? I mean it’s another species, can’t we see if we could co-habitat this place?
5. Ignore it, hell people are so often wrong, it’s probably some PR campaign from Meta right?
6. Something else?
(This is actually a question I posed to a client and their team this week – when you face a lot in your business, it can be easier to think of someone elses situation. And something so far fetched as the end of humanity is pretty out there right?
However it was so telling.
- I could instantly see who were the optimists.
- Who were what they call realists but others may call pessimists – it’s all in your view point right?
- I could tell who saw problems and who saw opportunities.
- I could see who needed support to embrace new ways of working.
- I could see who would be adaptable even at the end of the world.
- I could see who thought that Mandie Holgate was a complete nut job – but they are always the first to get in there and see how it makes businesses, strategies and even employee happiness better.
So what would you do?
It’s a telling exercise – and there’s no wrong answer – well along as the aliens aren’t actually rocking up!
But go further, I asked them “But how would it feel?”
So often in business decisions emotions are removed but we aren’t robots just yet, so removing emotions and feelings takes away many of the advantages to being human in business as much as it takes away the disavantages.
And expecting your team to be robots will miss out on great opportunities. So ask them, the aliens are coming what do you do?
If you want support on what they say, you are very welcome to email me anytime. I write my blog according to real clients strategies, needs and outcomes and I’m happy to write just for you as that often leads to new happy coaching clients too, so ask me anything.
